The Human Touch
The paint stains on this blouse are not random. They are the result of sewing all the seams with paint on my fingers. They show how much manual labour goes into making a garment. All clothing around the world is placed under the sewing machine and guided by hand. The paint stains on this blouse represent the handprints of those people.
This concept, The Human Touch, was created by Juliet Seger in 2020

I bought a second-hand blouse and tailored it myself. I did this without paint on my fingers (because paint is very impractical, and I am still using my mother’s sewing machine). Afterwards, I sewed all the seams again ‘fake’ (without thread), this time with paint on my fingers, so that the traces of the sewing process appear on the blouse. Lastly, I sewed my own label diagonally over the H&M label; the label that was sewn in by a sewist in a faraway country, for far too little pay, and is then sold by H&M for a few euros.
This garment was made by people, and that should be visible.
